Once again, thousands of men and women are taking to the streets for Cancer Research UK's night-time walking marathon. Shine 2011 aims to raise vital funds for research and bring hope and light to the lives of those affected by cancer.

Participants will choose to walk for 26.2 or 13.1 miles through the cities at night, passing well known landmarks along the route. Cancer Research UK will be using light in different ways throughout the event to symbolise bringing hope to the darkness of cancer. The light also illustrates progress, ambition and how together, we will beat cancer.

As part of their fundraising, walkers will be able to raise money for a particular cancer that means something to them. Cancer Research UK funds research into all types of cancer and this is wonderful way of making Shine even more personal and relevant for everyone taking part.

CR UK are hoping to recruit 21,000 people to take part raising £4 million for life saving research

7,500 participants at Manchester with a fundraising target of £1.4 million
